The Health Secretary Wes Streeting joined GB News on Monday (January 6) to discuss modernising the NHS, when presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ellie Costello took the opportunity to quiz him on the UK government’s controversial response to President Donald Trump‘s intervention in Venezuela. However, the politician squirmed as he refused to answer when Ellie asked: “Is the Government supportive of US military action in Venezuela on Saturday, and are you confident that it was in line with international law?”

Streeting responded: “Well, this is fast fast-moving situation, and I don’t have anything to add this morning to what the Prime minister and the Foreign Secretary have already said.” He stuttered: “I appreciate that there are many people, including many of my own colleagues, who are making strident criticisms of the United States’ actions.” The politician continued: “What the Prime minister and the Foreign Secretary are doing is weighing up what they say, how they say it and when they say it, because this is a delicate moment.”

Streeting continued: “What the Prime minister’s considerations are is first and foremost UK interest and national security, secondly, how do we make sure the people of Venezuela get the government they actually voted for … and thirdly, how do we make sure that we are upholding European defence and security.

“Including our own national security at a time when the rules-based order is being disintegrated before our eyes, and let’s be clear about this, a world without rules is a world in which we are all less safe.”

However, many viewers were left unimpressed by his response, as one fumed: “The only thing disintegrating faster than that order is the trust we have in politicians to sort it out. Time to put common sense before grandstanding, love!”

Another furiously claimed: “In this country, your government has virtually dismantled rules-based order by your two-tier policies.”

A third raged: “Trying not to take a stance, so as not to destroy his leadership bid!”

“This week’s parrotted line, ‘it’s a fast-moving situation.’ Of course, it was an illegal act; just vessels can’t say their opinion out loud,” added another viewer.
