Britain woke to the shock news Donald Trump had ordered military action against Nicolás Maduro. It is long overdue, writes Paul Baldwin.

You won’t have failed to notice that you woke up to the New World Order 2026 today as President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes on Venezuela as Delta Force kidnapped its leader and his wife. Lawyers across the world clutched their pearls and whined “but you can’t do this!”
I think perhaps we may be forgiven for concluding that the day of unelected lawyers dictating how we all live our lives might be drawing to a close. At least in areas of US influence. Which is pretty much everywhere
The Donald does not give a stuff about lawyers. “But you cannot kidnap the elected leader of a nation state!” the aforementioned lawyers further gripe. But President Nicolás Maduro is not an elected leader – in 2024 the opposition candidate Edmundo González, had won by a landslide.
But fascist dictator Maduro whose henchmen control the National Assembly, the judiciary, and the electoral council just ignored the election and remained in power. He’s not an elected leader, just a cheap crook and a drug dealer – allegations he denies of course.
And if the US lifted a regular crook and drug dealer attempting to flood the streets of America with cocaine and fentanyl you’d be applauding. Which is exactly what we should be doing with this strike.
This is not the start of World War 3. It is a powerful nation state deciding that for too long they have sat back and let the crooks, the bent coppers, the thieving politicians and of course the cartels rule the roost.
As if the good people could do nothing about it. Turns out they could – just needed a chap in charge who realised this and was prepared to put his money where his mouth is.
Maduro will now face a court who will be accusing him of facilitating – perhaps even running – a cartel called Cartel de los Soles, one of two cartels designated by the US as Foreign Terrorist Organisations. So don’t be surprised if he’s up on actual terror charges.
Of course Trump is not Superman selflessly righting wrongs. He’s a businessman. He has only pitched into the Ukraine conflict for access to vast deposits of key rare earth minerals.
Venezuela has the world’s largest crude oil reserves and don’t think for a second Trump will not be compensating the US handsomely for the damage wrought on its streets by the Venezuelan cartels. And it should be noted Venezuela is a smallish-time player in the drugs world, compared to Colombia and Mexico for example.
But if you were a Cartel leader, or a corrupt politician in one of those countries how much more uneasy would you be feeling today?
Battering the cartels in whatever country they exist is now clearly on the agenda.
Of course at this point we should all spare a thought for the lefty Islington dinner party set – the price of their class A drug of choice is going to rocket…
