Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to a protein found in peanuts.
Peanut allergies have become more common in recent decades and usually develop in early childhood.
Symptoms of a reaction include an itchy mouth, tongue or throat; swelling of the lips, around the eyes or face; a red raised itchy rash; vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea; and a runny nose and sneezing.
In serious cases, exposure can trigger life-threatening anaphylaxis.
