Labour’s plan to roll out an extra eye test for older drivers risks forcing thousands of careful motorists off UK roads, an expert has said. The Government’s plan also reeks of discrimination, Dennis Reed, the founder and director of Silver Voices, a campaign group for the over-60s, said.
Motorists over 70 will have to have their vision checked every three years under Government plans. The measure is part of Labour’s new road safety strategy, which is to be published on Wednesday. Mr Reed told The Express: “Although we support the principle of regular eyesight tests for all drivers, to introduce it for the over 70s only smacks of age discrimination.
“We will be looking closely at the details, for example who does the tests, who pays for them, and is there the capacity to meet demand.

“There is the potential for thousands of careful and competent drivers being forced off the road because they can’t get the necessary eyesight tests in time for their renewals.”
“We know driving can be very important for older people’s wellbeing and help them to live independently, but we must also make sure everyone is safe on our roads,” local transport minister Lilian Greenwood said, the BBC reported.
“As the country’s older population grows, our plans in the first road safety strategy in more than a decade will preserve personal freedoms where possible with action to save lives.”
The AA advises on its website: “While older drivers have the benefit of years of experience, often making them safer and more considerate on the road, health and fitness can become an issue.
“Naturally, as we age our reaction time slows down, our eyesight tends to get worse, and age-related conditions and medications can affect driving.”
Experts add: “You must also make sure you meet the eyesight requirement – regular eye tests will help.”
Over-70s have to renew their driving license in the UK, and every three years after that.
