Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) updates are coming into effect in a matter of days with motorists holding the keys to 59 cars likely to feel the full effects. Brand new owners of petrol and diesel models are the most affected by the new updates on April 1, 2025 with the most polluting models badly hit.
Labour is set to hike first-year VED car tax rates with many owners’ annual charges set to double. However, vehicles emitting over 255g/km of CO2 will be hardest hit with bills set to jump from £2,745 per year to £5,490. Luxury vehicles from top brands with large performance engines are set to be among the most impacted in a blow to owners.

A list of new models emitting over 255g/km of CO2 includes several models from Audi, Aston Martin, Bentley and BMW.
Mercedes is among one of the most affected brands with Ford, Porsche and Rolls-Royce also affected.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has previously stated that first-year VED rates will be changed to “widen the difference” between different fuel types.
The Treasury is expected to make an extra £415million over 2025/26 due to changes in first-year VED tax.

An extra £410million is expected to be taken from drivers over 2026/27 with £370million in extra revenue expected over 2027/28.
Controversially, from April, electric cars will no longer be exempt from paying the tax.
Glen Sanderson, the leader of Conservative-led Northumberland County Council, described this asa “slap in the face” for road users.
Sanderson said: “For many, the free road tax was the incentive to go for an electric car.
“The previous government deliberately did not change this tax to help the UK on its green promises. This is a slap in the face for climate change, and for all those who bought electric cars.”
