As warnings continue to emerge about escalating tensions between Russia and the West, security analysts have identified a series of locations regarded as the safest places to live in the UK in the event of a major attack.

The assessment comes after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov outlined two “red lines” that he said would provoke a military response, including any deployment of European troops in Ukraine and the seizure of Russian state assets. Although Lavrov insisted Russia does not seek conflict, he added that Moscow would retaliate if these boundaries were crossed.

Lavrov said: “We have no intention of going to war with Europe. We have no such intention. But we will respond to any hostile steps.”

Russian state television has also issued fresh threats following news that a British paratrooper had been killed in Ukraine.

Kremlin presenter Vladimir Solovyov told viewers that a nuclear strike on Britain was now “inevitable”, comments described by international relations experts as an attempt to intimidate Ukraine’s allies.

Security specialist Dr Arnab Basu, CEO of Kromek Group, told the Mirror that large urban centres would remain the most likely targets in any hostile scenario.

EMoov, a property data firm, compiled a list of locations in 2017 that would sit outside the immediate impact zones if major UK cities were struck. These areas are considered among the safest parts of the country in a worst-case scenario.

The UK’s safest areas identified in case of WW3:

  1. Cornwall
  2. Weymouth
  3. Folkestone
  4. Dover
  5. Margate
  6. Clacton-on-Sea
  7. Felixstowe
  8. Brixworth
  9. Bideford
  10. Aberystwyth
  11. Skegness
  12. Isle of Anglesey
  13. Barrow in Furness
  14. Lancaster
  15. Whitby
  16. Carlisle
  17. Dumfries
  18. Berwick-upon-Tweed
  19. Inverness

Professor Anthony Glees of the University of Buckingham said that Russia’s latest warnings were designed to pressure Europe and that the UK’s ability to respond is limited.

He said NATO’s absence from Ukrainian territory leaves any European deployment “very, very vulnerable.”
