A woman is over the moon after receiving her first state pension payment, but the reason behind her joy might surprise you, with so many changes to the scheme planned. While the financial benefit of reaching state pension age is clear, Siobhan Daniels, a digital creator, believes there’s more to it than just money.
To her, ageing is a privilege and she feels blessed to be growing older, sharing her thoughts on Instagram. This month, the Work and Pensions Secretary announced a review of the state pension age as, every six years, the government is required to conduct a review into the state pension age.
This currently stands at 66; however, the last one concluded in 2023, and the new one is set to finish in 2029. This means that changes could be ahead within the next few years.
The review will examine whether the current state pension age is still deemed appropriate. Factors such as life expectancy are taken into account during this assessment.
For now, though, Siobhan is thrilled to have received her payment. Recently, she explained just why she’s so pleased.
In a candid post, Siobhan expressed her pride in becoming an OAP, writing: “I am celebrating old today. I have received my first state pension payment. Something some of my siblings did not get to do. It is a privilege to age.”
The brief words were shared alongside a photo of herself relishing a stroll in the sunshine, perhaps to highlight how splendid the simple moments of life can be. She feels fortunate to continue enjoying these activities, and it’s evident that many others believe ageing is a cause for celebration too.
The post has garnered over 1,000 likes since it was shared, with dozens commenting to express their views. Many believe she conveys a very touching message.
One individual remarked: “Great news. I was 65 yesterday and have to wait another 16 months. Enjoy spending!” Another chimed in with: “It certainly is. My mum didn’t see 40 and my hubby just got to 53. I celebrate every year getting older. I’m just so glad that I’m still here.”
A third responded: “Yes, it’s a privilege to age! Congratulations, now it’s official, you are retired.” Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “Agreed – a privilege and so exciting when you get the first payment. I thought it might be delayed again til I got it. ’59ers rock!”
Another person also shared their story, stating: “My mum died at 36. Age is a privilege to be embraced. Enjoy your retirement.”
One more added: “You are right. My father died at 56, and my husband 54, so yes – it is a privilege to age.”
Numerous people also congratulated Siobhan and advised her to “spoil herself” now that she’s receiving her payments. They urged her to savour the “little luxuries” that she’s worked so diligently for over the years.
In other words, she’s living proof that the state pension can be about more than just money. For some, it’s a reminder that they’re still lucky enough to be enjoying and making the most out of life.
