Sky News was left in chaos on Thursday (December 5) as Home Secretary Yvette Cooper was left literally speechless by Kay Burley.

Kay was quizzing the MP on e-Visas when everything went downhill – with Yvette offering an immediate apology. Kay started out by saying: “Hello to you, Ms Cooper, it’s always a pleasure. Tell us about e-Visas.”

Cutting across her, Yvette responded: “Good morning Kay,” before apologising: “Sorry, Kay, I… My words cut across you.”

“No problem – it’s my fault. E-Visas – tell me about them,” Kay responded, to dead silence from a paused Yvette.

There was a moment of complete silence on-screen, as Kay awkwardly smiled at the camera on her end and Yvette’s feed froze completely.

Eventually Yvette’s feed unpaused and she began speaking, but Kay was already explaining: “Looks like we have one or two technical issues, that’s what happened. Sorry Yvette, we’re going to start again – those gremlins all over us this morning!”

Kay told Yvette she could finally hear her, and after another awkward pause Yvette confirmed her audio was also working.

“Here we go, one more go! E-Visas, tell me about them, go!” Kay cheered, and finally Yvette nodded and prepared to answer the question.

She replied: “So it’s effectively electronic Visas, makes it much speedier and much easier to check. Work had been done – they’d been started under the previous government. We’re rolling them forward but we have identified some problems in the implementation, so we are still going ahead, they are really important.

“They will make it much quicker, much easier, and also increase our security checks; however, we have to make sure that the detail is right, and that’s why we’re making some changes to the implementation.”

Kay pushed: “How much will they cost?” and Yvette told her: “This is just the normal Visa process – it’s effectively just making normal Visas electronic. This is part of getting a grip back on the asylum and immigration that this Conservative government really lost control over.”
