In a surprising twist, President Trump’s latest diplomatic move could shake up the global stage.

Sky News interrupted its scheduled programming to deliver breaking news involving President Trump, and the development could spell trouble for Sir Keir Starmer on the world stage. The broadcaster reported that Israeli Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to meet with Trump in Washington on Wednesday, according to a statement from Netanyahu’s office.
The talks are set to focus on negotiations with Iran and once more highlight Trump’s growing influence on international affairs, with the president once again positioning himself as a central power broker in Middle East diplomacy.
For Starmer, the move comes at an awkward time, as he attempts to establish his own authority and relationships with key allies. Trump’s direct engagement with Netanyahu risks sidelining Britain from crucial discussions on Iran.

The upcoming leaders’ meeting in Washington will follow indirect talks between Trump’s envoys and the Iranian foreign minister in Oman, which the U.S. said focused on limiting Tehran’s nuclear activities.
Netanyahu’s office stated that the Israeli prime minister believes negotiations should include restrictions on ballistic missiles and ending support for the Iranian axis. The meeting between Netanyahu and Trump appears to have been scheduled on short notice, as Trump noted on Friday that the first phase of indirect talks with Iran was “very good”.
Trump mentioned that Iran seems eager to make a deal, saying, “Iran looks like it wants to make a deal very badly. We have to see what that deal is, but I think Iran wants one very badly, as they should.” This development follows Iran’s launch of hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israel in June.
Netanyahu and Starmer have not always shared the easiest of relationships, as the Israeli PM has hit out at Starmer on multiple occasions, including last year when the PM declared that the UK would recognise Palestine as a state later this year.
In a scathing post on X, the Israeli PM typed: “Starmer rewards Hamas’s monstrous terrorism and punishes its victims. A jihadist state on Israel’s border TODAY will threaten Britain TOMORROW.”
Starmer promised that the U.K. would recognise a Palestinian state last September unless the Israeli Government took “substantive steps” to end the crisis in Gaza and committed to a long-term peace process that delivers a two-state solution.
Starmer repeated that Hamas must release all remaining hostages taken in the deadly October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, disarm and accept they will have no role in the Government of Gaza.
