Shocking new graphs have revealed the extent of Labour’s popularity crisis as the party and its leader fail to tackle the economy and immigration. A poll tracker by Britain Elects revealed a lack of trust between Labour and the public when it comes to the economy, with only 20.5% of people saying they trust them on the matter. The Tories were similiarly mistrusted, with just 21.1% of people saying they have faith in them to handle to economy.

Overall, 58.4% of respondents said they did not have faith in either party. Sir Keir Starmer is also facing a popularity crisis after just over 400 days in No. 10. The Labour leader’s net favourable ratings were at -37, according to another Britain Elects tracker. He began his time as Prime Minister with just 40% of Brits having a favourable view of him, and just slightly less than that having an unfavourable view of him.

Sir Keir has been off to a poor start in comparison to his predecessors – coming in as the second-worst performing PM of the last nine, with just Liz Truss beneath him.

A YouGov survey also found that 71% think the Prime Minister is handling migrant hotels poorly – including 56% of Labour voters. Almost four in 10 people said that immigration and asylum is the most important issue in the UK.

It comes as a record 28,076 people have made the dangerous journey across the English Channel in small boats so far this year, up 46% on the same period in 2024.

Meanwhile, official figures released earlier this month showed a total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.

In response to the growing crisis, Labour plans to overhaul the asylum appeal system in a bid to speed up the deportation of people with no right to be in the UK.

Yvette Cooper promised to implement the new scheme amid protests about the use of hotel accommodation for migrants.

The Home Secretary said “completely unacceptable” delays in the appeals process left failed asylum seekers in the system for years.

There are about 51,000 asylum appeals waiting to be heard, taking on average more than a year to reach a decision.
