, citing “a rapid movement of customers choosing to do their banking digitally”.

The bank’s statement added: “Closing a branch is always a very difficult decision, and we spend a great deal of time assessing where and when we do this and how to minimise the impact it may have on our customers.” The bank also said that 750 jobs would be at risk of redundancy. The branches will be closed during the months of June, July, and August.

Santander isn’t the only major bank to announce closures. Natwest is to close 53 branches this year, and Lloyds Banking Group, which includes Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland, is closing 136 branches.

NatWest’s announcement came after the bank saw a 62% decline in in-person transactions over the last six years, while mobile app usage soared by 53%.

The group closed down 48 branches in 2024 and in 2023.
