Furious Brits have slammed Sadiq Khan over the London New Year’s firework display after it displayed the EU flag. As midnight struck, 100,000 people gathered on the banks of the River Thames to watch as more than 12,000 fireworks lit up the night sky, with millions of viewers watching at home. However, the display has been labelled a “disgrace” after showing stars of the European Union flag in the London Eye.
Taking to social media, one user wrote: “We voted to leave the EU 10 years ago and Sadiq Khan is still putting its flag up during the New Year’s fireworks. He’s pathetic beyond belief.” Another person said: “What an absolute disgrace with the EU flag being shown in the London eye!” A third added: “Almost a whole decade later and EU flag still in new years fireworks in London. They will never get over losing a democratic election.”

A fourth similarly wrote on X: “Did I just see an EU flag superimposed on the London Eye during the fireworks? That is just sad.”
The showstopper also included an image from the film Wicked: For Good, which featured as part of an event partnership with Universal Pictures.
In response, a social media user wrote: “Happy New Year’s Moaning About Sadiq Khan’s Typically Gratuitous Woke And Remoaner Messaging And What The Hell Was The Wicked Promo About In The London Fireworks That We All Have To Pay For Day, everyone!”
In another segment of the display, national flags from around the world were shown with a voiceover declaring “this is what England means to me”.
The narrator said: “Here’s what England means to me – the real England.
“When it’s sunny, it’s too hot. When it’s cold, the weather’s rubbish. England to me is a cup of tea. How many sugars? I’m sweet enough.
“England, to me is Caribbean barbers with a sharpish trim.
“It’s Christian neighbours saying Happy Hanukkah, mate, and Muslim mums saying Merry Christmas, love.
“And you think you’re seeing flags now? Wait until the World Cup’s on. Then you’ll know about flags, my son.
“Because this is what England means to me. It’s about loving each other no matter what colour you are, where you’re from, or who your God is. Because this is England. This is the United Kingdom.”
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said ahead of the firework display: “I’m delighted that we have once again shown why London’s New Year’s Eve celebrations are the greatest in the world.
“The eyes of the globe were looking on as we lit up our famous skyline with our best-ever display of fireworks and lighting, all to an incredible soundtrack. From celebrating our wonderful year of women’s sport and Europe beating the USA in the Ryder Cup, to celebrating our diversity and looking ahead to a fantastic 2026, we’ve sent the message that London will always be a city of hope and a place for everyone.”
