On Monday’s BBC Breakfast, host Sally Nugent probed Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds about whether England should have an extra bank holiday after the Lionesses won the women’s Euros final on Sunday night.

The Lionesses made history by winning the Euros for the second time running after beating Spain in last night’s nailbiting final. The team’s homecoming parade will take place in central London tomorrow (Tuesday, July 29), and supporters will line the streets of the nation’s capital to mark the occasion.

In the wake of the victory, Nugent asked Reynolds: “What do you think about giving England an extra Bank Holiday on the back of that win?” He replied: “Well, look, it’s absolutely magnificent. I have never seen an England team that handles these big tournaments as well as this England team. Not just the final last night, but the Sweden match in the semi.

“They’ve been so impressive in how they do it, so there should certainly be a celebration. I can’t promise a bank holiday, but there will be a celebration in Downing Street today. The victory parade is scheduled for tomorrow.”

Nugent interjected: “Just really briefly, when you were in opposition, Sir Keir Starmer suggested if the men had won the Euros, there should have been a bank holiday for them…”

She paused, and the MP issued a vague response: “I am not aware we’ve committed to a bank holiday on this, I’m afraid. I’d love to announce that on television this morning, but I can’t. But there should rightly be a celebration for this brilliant team.”

Viewers flocked to comment on the interview, with one person writing on X: “I expected better from BBC Breakfast.” Another said, “The ridiculously embarrassing question that is asked by cringeworthy folk who should know better after every significant sports event for the national teams.”

A third shared: “Pathetic. As if the country isn’t in a big enough mess!” Another penned: ” Another added: “Idea is stupid, point is Starmer was happy to support one before had Men won, but it negatively impacts economy so as ever another U turn from him.”

BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One from 6am.
