GB News presenter Bev Turner took aim at Rachel Reeves‘ transport spending plan, which she delivered on Wednesday, June 4 at a bus factory in Rochdale. The Chancellor tore up Treasury rules as she announced billions of pounds of investment in public transport in the North and Midlands. However not everyone felt convinced by the delivery of her speech, and many appeared to notice that workers behind her appeared “bored” by her speech, as Turner’s co-host Andrew Pierce divulged he felt “sorry for them” having to listen to her.

Speaking on the programme, Pierce remarked: “Who do you feel more sorry for the people listening at home or the men standing behind her at that bus factory trying to look vaguely interested. It all sounded familar, because it was. a lot of it was announced by Rishi Sunak‘s government in 2023.”

Turner responded: “The metrolink system has been around in Manchester for years, it is very good, but there were these little dead spots. I can’t help but think this is an Andy Burnham project. Rachel Reeves is there taking credit for this. This has been a long time in the planning.

In a brutal blow to Reeves, she added: “Unfortunately, she has such an unfortunate way of delivering that it is easy to zone out.”

Viewers of the show also wrote in to share their thoughts on the awkward address from the Chancellor, as one remarked: “The workers body language speaks for the nation.” Another simply said: “What a load of tosh.” A third commented: “Another boring and robotic speech from Rachel Reeves.”

Reeves also used her 30-minute speech to attack Nigel Farage’s party and the Tories, while setting out Labour’s economic vision for the UK.

The Chancellor confirmed for the first time that the changes to winter fuel payments, which will enable more pensioners to receive the payments, will come into force this year. In other words, pensioners will get the money this winter and won’t have to wait until next year. It is still unclear which pensioners will be eligible, but we do know it will be more than those currently receiving payments.

Originally, every pensioner was eligible; however, the Chancellor’s means-testing policy, announced last year, resulted in more than nine million losing the money.

Meanwhile, Tory Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride fumed: “Labour’s promises lack any serious plan. This week’s defence announcement is a prime example – bold words but no answers. They’ve betrayed pensioners, farmers, and hardworking families, all while making empty tax promises that don’t add up.

“Between Labour and Reform, it’s a race to promise everything to everyone, with no way to pay for it. Britain deserves better than broken pledges and reckless leadership.”
