Rachel Reeves hates pensioners – and brutal new move proves it

The Chancellor is about to hit British pensioners hard, writes Carole Malone

Why does this Government hate pensioners so much? Why do a supposed bunch of socialists who are forever banging on about the needs of society’s poorest and most vulnerable decide to go for the collective jugular of Britain’s pensioners – not once but twice in the space of 14 months.

Because not content with taking away their Winter Fuel Allowance last year – then partially reinstating it after howls from a disgusted nation – Rachel Reeves is coming back in her November budget for more.

What the Hell is wrong with this heartless Government? We have 9 million people who it calls economically inactive – which is just another way of saying they don’t want to work.

We’re paying £6m a day for people who come here illegally to live in hotels. And just this week we discovered that migrants are taking taxi rides costing up to £600 a pop to go see doctors for piddling complaints like bad knees.

We’re also paying a billion a month in benefits to foreign nationals living here, yet we refuse to allow our pensioners- most of whom have worked all their lives – to live in peace, comfort and warmth.

And because Reeves now has a £50bn black hole to fill – a hole she created with her nonsense policies – she’s coming back to shaft pensioners yet again.

And that means it’s likely that over the next four years 500,000 of them could lose their Winter Fuel Allowance.

How cruel is that? Having calmed the fears of the elderly by U-turning and telling them that the WFA was being reinstated for those with a taxable income of less than £35,000 a year, they’ve now discovered this £35,000 figure will apply not just in winter 2025, but for the next four years which means that if state pensions and other pensions rise in line with inflation every year up to 500,0000 pensioners won’t qualify for the allowance.

But hang on. These inflation linked pensions rises aren’t putting extra money into pensioners’ pockets. They’re designed simply to maintain their standard of living. And with inflation now at 3.8%, with food inflation way higher and with the highest energy prices in all of Europe pensioners are going to be much worse off.

So why would they be less deserving of a Winter Fuel Payment?

But for a long time, there’s a narrative peddled by the Left that Britain’s pensioners are all millionaires with big fat private pensions when nothing could be further from the truth. We have 1.5m people in this country who live on nothing but the state pension which currently is about £850 a month which puts them way below the poverty line. And many more who have tiny private pensions.

And while yes, pensions cost this country huge amounts of money let’s not forget the majority of pensioners have been paying into government coffers for years having worked and paid taxes all of their lives.

So, the money they get at the end of their working lives from the state isn’t charity, its recompense for a lifetime of hard work.

But of course, Torsten Bell – the pensions minister who been agitating to axe the triple lock for years and who is helping Rachel Reeves compile her punishing budget – doesn’t give a stuff about any of that. This is the bloke who glibly said last year that that cutting the winter fuel allowance wouldn’t affect the health of elderly people.

And how the Hell would he know living in his taxpayer funded ivory tower.

Bell earns a bit fat minister’s salary; he gets what many would consider to be obscene expenses (which no doubt pay for HIS energy bills).

Bell clearly has no idea how the other half live. He doesn’t know that many pensioners sit in jumpers and overcoats at home in winter because they’re too terrified to turn the heating on.

He clearly doesn’t know many suffer from conditions like arthritis and respiratory illnesses which are made so much worse by living in cold conditions.

Does he not know? Or does he just not care? I suppose it’s hard to care about a generation of people when you don’t live in their world. In fact, when you don’t live in the real world.

And has it never occurred to Bell or Reeves and all the other bozos so determined to fleece society’s most vulnerable people that pensioners wouldn’t need a winter fuel allowance if we didn’t have the highest energy prices in Europe.

The truth is we have a faux socialist Government who which doesn’t give a toss about the elderly and seeing to it that they can live safe, dignified lives in retirement – which all civilised countries do.

Instead, we have a bunch of self-interest chancers running the country who will pay out billions to skivers, to people pretending to be sick and to people who just don’t feel like working.

Starmer isn’t prepared to weed out the cheaters and the scammers and he knows if he tries, he’ll be kicked out his job by his ministers.

So, instead he and Reeves and Bell choose to pick pocket the people who can’t fight back.

Our state pensions are pitifully low compared to other countries and that’s because the UK devotes a smaller percentage of its GDP to state pensions. For years we’ve needed a bigger pension pot, and governments have simply failed to plan for our growing ageing population. Which is our shame!

It is also our shame that we have a socialist government in power

that shafts people who can’t fight back, which uses them as human cash points who they can fleece for money when they need it, and then fleece them again when they need more.

Who’s be a pensioner in Stamer’s Britain?
