In just one of the Labour government’s sweeping fiscal changes since coming to power, the winter fuel payment — viewed as a lifeline for millions of pensioners in winter months — was scrapped in 2024.

Payments were only made available to those already recieving pension credits or other means-tested financial support.

Previously, the winter fuel payment went to all pensioners to help with soaring energy costs during the coldest months.

But in July, in one of the incoming government’s first acts in power, the rules changed, effectively cutting off the support for more than 10 million pensioners.

Several charities, unions and MPs criticised the decision to means-test the payment, saying that thousands of elderly people on low incomes, but who don’t claim pension credit, should still be able to qualify for the payment.

So what do you think? Should the payment be reinstated in 2024? Vote in our poll and join the debate in the comments section. Can’t see the poll below? Click here.

The winter fuel payment is worth £200 for those on certain benefits and born between 23 September 1944 and 22 September 1958.

For those born before 23 September 1944, and on certain benefits, it is worth £300.

If you live with someone, and jointly claim benefits, only one of the couple receives the payment.
