ID cards are set to become a reality with Prime Minister Keir Starmer expected to give the green light to plans as early as Friday. The new “Brit card” would be asked for when people start new jobs following the revelation asylum seekers were working for delivery firms.

Cards would be checked against a central database of those entitled to work in the UK. Under the rules every adult in the UK would be required to carry a card.

Sir Keir Starmer is said to have been convinced to back ID cards following pleas from senior figures including French President Emmanuel Macron.

More than 32,000 people have arrived in UK from France on small boats.
