Older drivers warned over car insurance ‘increase’ at this age

Budget Insurance highlighted that age-related health conditions, such as declining vision or reduced reaction times, can make driving more dangerous.

Motorists of a certain age could be hit with a hike in their annual car insurance bill, experts have warned. Ian Wilson, a car insurance specialist and Managing Director of Tiger.co.uk, warned drivers in their mid-to-late 70s may face higher charges. This indicates that those celebrating their 75th to 79th birthdays in 2025 might be met with escalating costs to keep their cars on the road.

Older drivers and pensioners in their 60s typically benefit from some of the most affordable rates, but these fees tend to skyrocket once motorists reach their late 70s , largely due to safety concerns. Ian said: “Older drivers are typically considered one of the safest age groups, which is why the over-65 category enjoys the cheapest premiums.

“However, as drivers approach mid to late 70s, they often see their premiums start to increase, as accidents at that age can be more frequent and injuries could be more severe.”

The second-highest average claim cost on the road comes from motorists aged between 86 and 90, just below younger drivers aged 18-20 years old.

Drivers aged above 91 are the third highest, highlighting how older drivers can be seen as a greater risk to insurance companies.

Research from consumer watchdog Which? revealed motorists aged between 75 and 84 have annual car insurance bills of £417, a substantial jump from the £336 paid by those aged between 65 and 74.

Meanwhile, specialists at Budget Insurance have indicated that numerous factors contribute to escalating car insurance premiums with advancing age.

Amongst the most considerable factors are rising claim expenses and an increased accident risk, whilst health complications also constitute a major element.

Budget Insurance highlighted that age-related health conditions, such as declining vision or reduced reaction times, can make driving more dangerous.

Age UK added: “Car insurance costs are calculated based around risks and the likelihood of a claim being made.

“While older drivers have lots of road experience, they also tend to face more health challenges that can affect their driving. This increases the risk of being involved in an accident and therefore increases the price of insurance too.”
