Campaigner and journalist Owen Jones received a four-letter response at Labour’s conference before being banned from the event

A Labour member of the House of Lords was caught on film issuing a furious four-letter response to Left-wing journalist Owen Jones at the Labour Party conference. The confrontation came before Labour Party officials ordered Mr Jones to leave the conference in Liverpool, claiming without providing details that there was a “safeguarding” issue.
Mr Jones has released a YouTube video showing him trying to interview Labour politicians and activists at the conference, with some of them answering his questions while others refuse. And the film showed former Labour MP Lord Mann telling him to “f*** off”. In the video, Mr Jones, who is a critic of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, asked Lord Mann: “Do you think Israel’s committing genocide?” He added that Lord Mann has been “very outspoken about the whole issue”.
The conversation becomes more heated as Lord Mann says: “You’ve no idea my views or what I do on that.” Lord Mann then says: “I think what we should be doing is making sure there’s peace and working with all sides.”
But when Mr Jones repeatedly asks about UK arms sales to Israel, Lord Mann eventually grabs his microphone and tells the camera: “So this man is busy telling me my views.” The Labour politician then walks away, taking Mr Jones’s microphone with him.
Mr Jones said: “Can I have that back?”
Lord Mann responded: “F*** off”.
Mr Jones said: “John, don’t be ridiculous. John, give me the mic, come on.”
Eventually, Lord Mann returned the microphone.
Introducing his YouTube video at the start of the film, Mr Jones explained: “The polling is catastrophic. More than half of British voters want Keir Starmer to resign.
“He’s less popular than any prime minister in recorded history, including Liz Truss at her lowest ebb. And only 11% of British voters have a positive view of the British Government. Over 70% are dissatisfied.
“I’m not a polling expert, but that is not looking good. Why has it all gone so wrong? Do people here understand how bad it is? What is the point of the Labour Party these days? Let’s see what they think.”
However, the video showed many Labour politicians refusing to answer questions, as Mr Jones pursued them with a microphone. Labour London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan asked him repeatedly: “How long are you here for?”
Environment minister Dame Angela Eagle told him: “You again. Go away!”
Labour MP Dame Emily Thornberry told Mr Jones it was “extraordinary” he had “got in” to the conference. She did then speak to Mr Jones about the conflict in Gaza, before saying: “The trouble with you, Owen, is you don’t listen.”
The video also showed Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and trade minister Sir Chris Bryant answering questions from Mr Jones about the Gaza conflict.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Left-wing Labour MPs who are critical of Sir Keir Starmer were far more willing to speak to Mr Jones.
They included MP Richard Burgon, a former member of the shadow cabinet, who said: “If next May the elections in Scotland, Wales and the council elections across the country are as the opinion polls predict, I think it’s politically inevitable that the prime minister will be gone and that would mean that this is his last Labour Party conference.”
And independent polling expert Sir John Curtice warned that Labour has suffered “the quickest and most precipitous drop” in support, according to opinion poll data, “that any newly elected government has ever suffered”.
Mr Jones later received an email from Labour saying his conference pass had been revoked following what the email said were “complaints we have received about your conduct”.
The email said the decision had been taken “with everyone’s wellbeing in mind”.
Mr Jones wrote on X: “Labour has cancelled my conference pass. Absolutely pathetic, Trumpian behaviour. They are here suggesting that attempts to question Cabinet members and MPs about Britain facilitating Israel’s genocide is a ‘safeguarding issue’.
“This is clearly insane. I’ve been filming videos at Labour and Tory conference for a decade now. This involves trying to get ministers to answer questions which – unfortunately! – most media outlets refuse to ask.
“After countless videos, this is the first time my pass has been revoked.”
