This is the moment some furious locals erupted after being told migrants housed in a nearby hotel may have access to private healthcare.

Footage posted on social media shows Nathan Evans, Conservative Group Leader at Trafford Council, telling a public meeting he understands healthcare for migrants staying at Cresta Court Hotel in Altrincham had been contracted to a private provider.

He added: “[That’s what] my understanding is. It’s not a statement of fact. That should mean they won’t be putting weight on our local [health services].”

Mr Evans was responding to a question from an attendee, who asked how hospitals, doctors and dentists would be affected by the housing of some 300 male migrants at the hotel.

It comes after the Labour Government said it would end the use of hotels to accommodate asylum seekers although Cresta Court Hotel’s use is “newly created”, according to Sky News.

Councillor Evans told Express.co.uk he found out last week that the migrants’ healthcare would be contracted out and that the clip circulated online only shows a snapshot of the meeting.

He said: “I went on to say in the meeting that we don’t support [housing single, male migrants at the hotel], but it keeps them out of our doctors’ surgeries.

“We just had our Minor Injuries Unit at Altrincham Hospital closed. We’ve now 300 people on our doorstep. My understanding is that they are taking out a contract to support these people. Meanwhile, people here can’t get a doctor’s appointment.”

Rob Bellingham, Chief Officer for Commissioning at NHS Greater Manchester, said: “We have a duty to secure the provision of safe and appropriate NHS care for people while their asylum claims are being managed.

“NHS Greater Manchester has made arrangements with a local primary care provider to ensure asylum seekers who have arrived very recently receive the immediate care they need.”

Mr Evans claimed residents have so far been met by a “wall of silence” from the Home Office, NHS and council when raising questions about the hotel’s use to accommodate migrants.

He added: “This was a ministerial decision. It’s not like this has happened by accident. Someone took this decision. People are worried about it. [The hotel] is near two girls’ schools.

“Residents don’t want them at the hotel, right in the centre of the town.”

Locals learned about the new arrivals after bookings for meetings, wedding receptions and other events were cancelled so the hotel could be clear for the migrants to move in.

Mr Evans claimed some locals concerned by the situation weren’t getting answers from their local ward representatives or the Labour-led council so the six-strong group of Tory councillors stepped in.

Asked if he was motivated by political point scoring, he said: “There are no elections here next year. They’re not for another five years. But I’ve got hundreds of emails [from residents]. It’s our town. It’s close to my heart. No one is speaking up for residents.”

At last week’s public meeting, one concerned resident asked if there would be a curfew or whether the asylum seekers would be able to wander around after 7pm.

Community police officer Colin Dytor, in comments quoted by Sky, said: “We can’t just lock people up who haven’t committed a crime. We live in a very tolerant and open society and we have to continue that.”

Altrincham and Sale West MP Connor Rand said he had been assured checks had been made on the men by the Home Office.
