The terrifying blaze at Clacket Lane services
The M25 is closed in both directions as terrifying images show a massive HGV fire that has erupted into a fireball and sparked a major emergency services response.
A massive emergency response from Kent Fire and Rescue Service, London Fire Brigade, and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service is seing dozens of firefighters battle the blaze as flames and smoke fill the night sky at Clacket Lane services.
It broke out just after 10pm tonight and has led to the closure of the London-bound carriageway as the 18-wheeler is decimated by flames. It has also closed the M26 westbound.
The M25 in Surrey and Kent is closed in both directions between junction 5 near Sevenoaks in Kent and junction 6 near Godstone and Caterham in Surrey. This has also closed the M26 westbound between junction 2A near Wrotham Heath and M25/A21.
The lorry has been obliterated
A spokesperson for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said: “The lorry was well alight upon arrival, and crews are using various firefighting methods in an attempt to extinguish the fire.”
Both sides of the M25 remain shut and the road is likely to remain closed for quite some time.
National Highways said: “The M25 in Surrey/ Kent is closed in both directions between J5 near Sevenoaks and J6 near Godstone /Caterham due to a serious heavy goods vehicle fire. This has also closed the M26 westbound between J2A near Wrotham Heath and M25/A21.
The flames have engulfed the HGV
“Road users travelling clockwise are advised to follow the Hollow Triangle diversion symbol on road signs.
“If this incident impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
The closures a extending as far back as the M26. Drivers are being advised to avoid the area and follow the designated diversions, or seek alternative routes.
It is reported the truck overturned after hitting debris on the carriageway but the driver is safe. Long delays are expected in both directions.
Firefighters are battling the blaze
A Surrey Police statement said: “The road is closed in both directions between junctions 5-6, and is likely to be impacted for some time.
“Please avoid the area and seek an alternative route. We will bring you further updates as they become available.”
Diversion route:
- At M25 Junction 5 follow onto A21 and then take the second A25 exit towards Westerham.
- Follow A25 through Sundridge, Brasted, Westerham, Limpsfield and Oxted.
- Continue along A25 towards Godstone to A25 / A22 roundabout.
- Take 3rd exit onto A22 towards London to M25 Junction 6 “Godstone Interchange” and take 2nd exit and rejoin M25 towards Gatwick.
Road users travelling anti-clockwise are advised to follow the Hollow Square diversion symbol on road signs
- Exit the M25 at J6 then at the Godstone Interchange take the 3rd exit onto the A22 towards East Grinstead.
- At the A22/A25 roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A25 towards Westerham.
- Follow the A25 through Limpsfield, Oxted, Westerham, Brasted and Sundridge.
- At the traffic signal junction A25/M25 turn left to re-join the M25 towards Dartford Crossing.
