Presenter Kate Garraway seemed to butt heads with a Labour minister on Friday’s episode of Good Morning Britain. The ITV host was working alongside her co-star Robert Rinder when they welcomed Care Minister Stephen Kinnock onto the show to discuss the latest cuts to disability benefits.
Kate accused the Labour party of “getting it so wrong” as there have been talks of making further cuts to Personal Independence Payments (PIP). She went on to challenge Mr Kinnick on the Labour Party’s values following the government’s decisions around the winter fuel allowance and welfare. The ITV star said: “The problem is, the big things that have upset people and led to the biggest u-turns, are things that do not align with what people perceive as Labour values.” She then noted that the MP’s dad, former Labour MP Neil Kinnock, made a “mythical” speech about how benefits would be “whittled away” under Margaret Thatcher’s government.

The presenter then continued: “And yet, this Labour government attacked the elderly by taking away Winter Fuel Payments, which led to a u-turn. There are big changes to the benefits, with the disabled and vulnerable being scared about how they are going to live because of these changes. It just eats at the core of what people believe what Labour is.”
She then demanded: “How has the message got so wrong, if what you say is true?” The minister replied: “Well… our Labour values are clear. We will always fight for dignity, respect and valuing what people do for our communities.”
But Kate was not buying what he was saying. “But that is not what this looks like, is it?” She asked, bluntly interrupting him.
“That is not what this is. You might say the details there but Keir Starmer has had to make this change after a landslide majority, not even a year in power, and suddenly you’re back to an absolute rebellion.”
Mr Kinnock snapped back as he demanded: “Well, if you just let me finish the point!” Kate then agreed that she would as he continued: “Those values are fundamental. They are integral to what it means to be Labour.”
He then said that despite the values, changes have needed to be made, adding: “But you don’t deliver those values, you don’t put them into practice by just walking away from problems and putting them in the too difficult box. We are a party that is about radical reform. The first word on our manifesto is change.”
