Labour supporter and political commentator Benjamin Butterworth found himself in an awkward position live on GB News, as journalist Carole Malone skewered him with just four words. A row broke out on Patrick Christys’ show last night (February 16) over prime minister Keir Starmer’s attempt to cancel local elections, before making a swift U-turn.

Butterworth was eager to defend the PM’s position, arguing: “When people can’t get drugs on the NHS or there aren’t enough teachers in schools, you would rather the money go on a load of parish councillors to do a bit more bureaucracy-“ but was cut off by Malone, who fumed: “You are really struggling!”

She said: “You are really struggling now Ben. They are really struggling now.”

When it was put to Butterworth that “democracy is always going to inconvenience people”, he fumed: “Hang on, hang on, this is such codswallop.”

He was told: “You can’t cancel it because it’s inconvenient or expensive, we live in a democracy, and our prime minister and his cabal of people who have attempted to break the law by cancelling these elections in this cabinet don’t like that.”

Malone then fumed: “Keir Starmer is a lawyer, he is the former boss of the Crown Prosecution Service. A cursory check allowed him to find out that cancelling elections was illegal, but he didn’t bother to check. He’s trying to make out that he’s just reading legal advice today…

“This is nonsense, they should have found this out weeks and weeks ago. They knew it was illegal and they pursued it because they did it on the off chance they’d be successful.

“If it had not been for Nigel Farage they would have stayed cancelled.”
