GMB’s Richard Madeley shares breaking news announcement
Keir Starmer was dealt a crushing blow as Richard Madeley shared a “breaking news” announcement on Good Morning Britain. The presenter joined Kate Garraway on Thursday’s (May 22) instalment of the ITV programme where he revealed that a High Court judge has blocked Labour from concluding its negotiations on the Chagos Islands. Richard said: “Some breaking news that’s just come in to close that programme with. The UK’s government’s plan to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Maurities has been halted by a high court injunction issued in the early hours.”
“The injunction was granted following a legal challenge by two Chagossian individuals who said they weren’t consulted about the agreement and it can’t go ahead until they are.” The ITV host added: “It’s a little bit of a road block for the government.” The presenters were joined by Jonathan Ashworth and Kwasi Kwarteng, who discussed the matter in the ITV studio.

The former Conservative MP said: “Yeah it is. I don’t agree with the actual policy but I think it’s very strange that a judge has told the government that they can’t go ahead with what they agreed.”
He added: “I’m slightly concerned about that, even though I disagree.”
Ashworth said the government “had to do something” with the Chagos Islands, revealing the previous Conservative government was looking into the same deal.
“Yeah but we said no,” Kwarteng declared.
The ex-Labour politician chimed in: “You might have objections to the specifics of the deal but the principle of this is something that both governments have known they’ve had to deal with.”

Kwarteng later said: “The people of Chagos weren’t consulted. There was no vote. We’ve consistently said with the Falkland Islands that there would be no change of status unless it went to the people.
“But with this deal, two individuals are saying this is happening without reference to the people.”
The prime minister had planned to give the islands – which are home to the strategically important US military base on Diego Garcia – to the Mauritian Government.
The legal action claimed that the government failed in its legal duties to consult properly, act fairly, and consider the profound consequences for the Chagossian people.
Keir Starmer had been expected to attend a virtual ceremony alongside representatives from the Mauritian government on Thursday morning to sign off on the deal.
