A new poll has revealed the public believes the Labour Government is handling most key issues badly in a blow to Sir Keir Starmer. More than 8,000 Britons took part in the YouGov study between May and early June, with the Government’s handling of immigration receiving the most scathing review.

Fifty-two percent of people taking part in the survey said the Government is handling the issue very badly, while 22% selected ‘fairly badly’ which comes as a record number of migrants have crossed the Channel in small boats this year. Only one in seven (14%) gave Labour a positive review on the matter. Fifteen key issues were selected in the poll, with Sir Keir’s party receiving only one net positive rating (net +3).

This was regarding combating terrorism — 37% of the public said it is being handled well by the Government, with 34% disagreeing.

Labour fared next best in the issue of defence where the Government has pledged to increase spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027.

However, the Goverment failed to score a net positive rating (net -7) — 34% said defence is being managed well, compared to 41% who disagreeed.

Labour didn’t manage to score a single net positive rating in the remaining 13 issues; transport (net -23), environment (net -29), education (net -27), Brexit (net -33), inflation (net -39), NHS (net -48), unemployment (net -36), economy (net -52), crime (net -45), housing (net -50), welfare benefits (net -53), immigration (net -60) and taxation (net -58).

Rachel Reeves‘ tenure as Chancellor has caused controversy and of those surveyed in the poll, 71% said they believed the economy is being handled badly, hugely outnumhering the 19% who believe it is being handled well.

Similarly, 69% believe the NHS is being handled badly, compared to the 21% who think it is being handled well.

Terrorism and defence are the only issues that half of Labour voters believe the Government is performing well in, according to the research.

Reform UK voters are least satisifed with the Government’s performance, YouGov said.
