GB News welcomed Spiked Online’s Tom Slater to discuss threats to Keir Starmer‘s leadership after a landslide win in summer 2024. It comes as reports claim Labour MPs are reportedly plotting to replace the party’s leader after making a U-turn on their loyalty.

Anne Diamond opened up the morning show and said newbies, who are only in Parliament because of Starmer, are now plotting against him. Tom addressed the landslide majority, but referred to the win as a “loveless landslide with wide support, but quite shallow”.

He continued: “The fact that was just last summer, and now he has such little authority, not just in the country, which we’re already seeing in the opinion polls he’s the least popular, but also he’s incapable of projecting any authority within his own party. Many of these MPs used to be nicknamed the Starmer troopers, selected for their loyalty.”

Tom explained that it seems to be those people in particular who are getting restless, adding that it’s the people who are in Parliament for the first time and don’t want it to be the only time, who are making a U-turn on their loyalty.

He said: “They’re quite understandably wondering if it’s the man at the top who is the problem. I think the issue is that it’s the blind leading the blind. There is no clear alternative. There isn’t someone who is waiting in the wings.”

He addressed the reports that MPs are plotting to replace Starmer and said it’s expected to take place after the May local elections, adding: “You can understand the desperation, it is not going well, but Labour lacks any viable alternative.”

Wes Streeting was discussed as a potential replacement, but Tom said he’s been very loyal to Starmer, adding that he believes due to his ambition, he thinks he would wait a few more years rather than swooping in when things are already down.

Anne chirped in to say she believes they have got to stick with Starmer, while Tom claimed the fact there’s no reasonable alternative for a new Prime Minister, this is Starmer’s “only card to play”. Tom noted that across the two main parties the level of political talent is “quite striking” to the point where there is no suitable replacement for Starmer at this stage.

He added: “It’s more than just being charismatic and a good leader, you need to have substance, principles, the politicians we have at the moment seem to have neither.”

People in the comments agreed, with one user writing: “With who?” While another wrote: “The classic game of musical chairs in politics. Seems the only thing they’re good at is swapping leaders instead of sorting out the mess they’re in.”
