A woman has taken to social media to share how much she paid for her fish and chips in Liverpool and kicked off a discussion about how much the classic British takeaway dish should cost, with one person calling it shocking. Chippy tea is a go-to for many Brits who enjoy it regularly throughout the week. The classic dish dates back generations and to this day, it remains a favourite for individuals and families around the country. There’s nothing better than a fresh battered fish and a hearty helping of cooked chunky chips.

But like many things nowadays, fish and chips have seen a gradual increase in price across the UK over the last few years, due to a number of factors. This has sparked a debate among fans of the traditional British takeaway, with foodies arguing about how much they think it should cost and how much they pay in their respective local takeaways. One woman took to TikTok to reveal how much her recent fish and chips from her local chip shop cost her, and people were quick to share their opinions on it.

Suzanna, who posts videos under the username @suzannatravelsolo, shared a clip of the chippy tea she paid £14 for. It included a small portion of fish, chips and mushy peas with a side of curry sauce and a bottle of Dandelion and Burdock.

“So, how much is fish and chips where you live?” she asked viewers. “We’ve done this debate before. This was £14 for this, and also I got some bread and butter and a battered sausage, because, you know, I haven’t been to the chippy for a long time.”

Other TikTok users were quick to take to the comments section with their thoughts and many revealed the price they pay for fish and chips from their local chip shop. One of them said £14 was a “shocking price”, calling out the portion size and saying it should be “full”.

Another revealed: “Yorkshire Dales £9.50 fish and chips, £1.30 tea cake, mushy peas £1.70, battered sausage £3.05. Yours looks delicious and a big portion too!”

A Kent local revealed that they pay £10 for fish and chips. Another user wrote: “City centre prices are always a bit more expensive, but you can’t beat a chippy tea in Liverpool. Couldn’t do it without curry sauce, so I’m with you on that one.”

However, not everyone was surprised. One person wrote: “£15 last time I had it in SE London.”

According to a 2024 survey on fish and chips from KFE, the average price of a regular portion of fish and chips in the UK was £10.88, but there were “huge variations” in portion sizes across the country.

Meanwhile, separate data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the average price of fish and chips in the UK was up 52 percent in 2024 compared to 2019.
