Another migrant has successfully crossed Channel for a second time after being returned to France under Keir Starmer’s one-in-one-out deal.
The unidentified asylum seeker crossed in a small boat on Sunday, it is understood, as hundreds arrived.
And it comes less than a week after an Iranian man, dubbed the ‘hokey cokey’ migrant, who was the first to return to the UK after being sent back to France, was deported.
The second migrant is understood to have been identified by his photo and fingerprints when he arrived and will be sent back to France “as quickly as possible”, according to officials.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: “Yet another illegal immigrant who was supposed to return to France has now re-appeared in the UK. The government is mired in migrant chaos and has clearly lost control of our borders. They can’t even keep out illegal immigrants France has agreed to take back.
“Since the French returns deal was announced only a handful of illegal immigrants have been returned to France while around 20,000 have arrived here. 99.5% are being allowed to stay and only 0.5% returned to France. This will clearly have no deterrent effect whatsoever.
“So it’s no surprise that 2,000 illegal immigrants have arrived in the last four days alone. Illegal Channel crossings have surged since Labour were elected.
“It was a huge mistake by Keir Starmer to cancel the Rwanda removal deterrent before it even started. We now need tougher action to end this – coming out of the ECHR which will enable us to remove every illegal immigrant within a week of arrival. That is the Conservative plan.”
Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperson Max Wilkinson MP said: “Once again, the Home Office has shown staggering levels of incompetence. Labour – and the Conservatives before them – have failed to break the grip of the gangs and bring the numbers down. Failures like this show just how broken our system is. Enough is enough.
“Now is the time for Labour to back up their big promises with actions. They must stop hotels being used to house asylum seekers up and down the country and finally get this scheme functioning properly, using large-scale returns agreements with all safe countries so those who have a right to stay can start integrating and paying tax, and those who don’t have a right to be here are swiftly returned.”
A Home Office spokesperson said: “Anyone looking to return to the UK after being removed under the UK-France agreement is wasting their time and money.
“This individual was detected by biometrics and detained immediately. His case will be expedited, and he will be returned to France as quickly as possible.
“The message is clear: if you try to return to the UK you will be sent back. We will do whatever it takes to scale up removals of illegal migrants and secure our borders.”
The Prime Minister’s spokesman said it was “absolutely evidence of the system working”.
“You have got a person who’s arrived at the front door, who’s been detected immediately – their journey has been wasted completely,” he said.
“They are in line to return to France, just as the previous case was, out of pocket and out of chances.
“They are destined to go back straight to France and the money spent on this dangerous crossing would have been spent in vain.”
The unnamed Iranian was one of more than a dozen Channel migrants returned to France on a flight last Tuesday.
Last Wednesday, the Home Office confirmed so far 94 migrants have been returned to France and 57 people have arrived in the UK under the scheme.
