A presenter on Good Morning Britain faced backlash after “defending” Labour’s latest scandal. It comes as Homelessness Minister Rushanara Ali has resigned, after being accused of hypocrisy over claims she evicted tenants from a house she owns, before relisting the property at a higher rent.

The ITV show welcomed former Conservative Party advisor Salma Shah and author Nels Abbey to discuss the matter at hand, with presenters Adil Ray and Ranvir Singh. The latter explained that the minister’s actions were “within the current law”, however the problem is “that she is the Homelessness Minister, who has been backing the renters’ rights bill which is trying to overhaul that particular bit of the law.” Ranvir continued: “Which then would stop people, under the guise of trying to sell a house evicting tenants and then putting up the rent. Which is exactly what she just did.

“So, I mean, hypocrisy is all the way through this, right?” Salma cut in as she agreed that it was “appalling behaviour”. That was when Adil tried to interrupt to throw a different opinion into the works, playing devil’s advocate.

“Look, it’s worth saying that there is no suggestion that she did it deliberately, and in her defence, there is some logic in this,” he said. He said that for anyone who wants to sell a property “doesn’t know what it’s worth until it goes on the market”.

The presenter suggested that it might not have sold as she had helped and then she could have been advised by an agent to get people back in as renters and to hike the price up a bit.

He added: “There is a logic to it. What I’m saying is you can put rent up and every landlord does that on a new tenancy. You can if you think that you were charging a below average rent.”

However, the ITV host’s comments did not sit well with viewers at home – who branded him as “biased” and “pathetic”.

Posting to X/Twitter, one fan fumed: “@GMB @adilray @ranvir01 @Ommasalma Very left wing views on this programme today and most of them from Ray’s idiotic mouth. Well, Ray, if she hadn’t done anything wrong she wouldn’t have resigned. How about that?”

Another added: “@GMB @NickDixonITV Ray, your desperation to defend this minister shows so much bias,” while a third said: “@GMB @adilray @ranvir01 @Ommasalma Pathetic watching Ray trying to defend her.”
