Good Morning Britain turned tense as Adil Ray cut off his co-presenter Kate Garraway during a clash about small boat crossings and illegal immigration. Guest panellists Caroline Flint and Salma Shah were on hand to debate the latest measures put into place to quell the numbers after 25,000 migrants already crossed into the UK so far in 2025 – a record number at this point in the year.

Caroline said: “The government should be worried about some of these figures. On the boats situation, whilst there has, I think, been deportations up by something like 14% since the last general election, it demonstrates how difficult this situation is, and I wouldn’t be surprised if with a General Election last year, some of the organised criminals behind some of these boats sailing to this country and the trafficking of people thought, ‘Well here’s an opportunity to maybe ramp up before more severe measures to stop this come into being’. I think there might be something in that.”

Kate wondered: “So you think there’s things underway which will see the numbers go down?” as she replied: “I think what has happened, which is to be welcomed, is more discussions with the French about what they will do to actually hold people there. I think there has to be more done on that front.”

Later, however, Kate had to clarify one of her points as Adil jumped in to correct her. Adil interrupted the debate to say: “It’s just worth saying, though, that out of those migrants that do come on those boats, we know well over 70% of them do get asylum and their cases do get accepted. So there’s nothing to suggest that the vast majority of them end up in prisons-“

But was cut off by an apologetic Kate, who stammered: “No, absolutely, I- I want to make that clear, actually, because I worry that I suggested that. I’m not suggesting that-“

He interrupted her again to reassure her: “No, you weren’t-“ as Kate went on: “I think what it does is, sorry, prompt the emotion that people see those two statistics and think, ‘Numbers are going up, oh my goodness our jails are full of people that are connected’.

“What is behind that statistic, one in eight of total prison populations are foreign nationals?”

Fans weren’t happy over the debate, with one fuming: “Adil Ray needs to go!” while another said: “Beg Piers to come back, it’s your only hope.”

Another fan groaned: “Get Caroline Flint off the TV! She is a loud mouthed, opinionated person of little consequence whom GMB are paying for the tripe coming out of her mouth.” While a fourth social media user said: “Can’t cope with them interrupting each other.”
