Keir Starmer announced an emergency press conference after Donald Trump‘s decision to increase tariffs on multiple European countries, including the UK, over a statement of support for Greenland. Tensions have been rising since the decision was made, which Trump stated would see an increase to 10% tariffs, later rising to 25% tariffs, which could have a huge economic impact. Starmer called Trump to discuss the decision and told him it was “wrong”, but now as the President has kept his stance, pressure is mounting.
Discussing it on GB News, Ben Leo welcomed political editor David Maddox, who said: “[Starmer] is facing an impossible situation. The one thing he’s got right definitely in his time as Prime Minister is that he’s accepted that America is our most important ally.”

He stated that this may be a “put up and shut up moment” for Starmer for both Trump and the cabinet, adding: “It will be quite an interesting press conference, this one.”
As the decision to issue a press conference was discussed, GB News viewers shared their fury as one user wrote: “Addressing the nation over someone else’s territory!! We have our own national emergency!!”
Another added: “Whatever he says today he will U-turn on so why bother.” While a third stated: “Even better, it will be his resignation.” A fourth chimed in: “Starmer… is ridiculous.” A fifth wrote: “We are not going to win against Trump. Starmer has made us too poor and weak. Trump knows it.”
The press conference comes after it was confirmed that Starmer held a number of calls with leaders across Europe after issuing a statement of support to Greenland. He later called Trump as Starmer reiterated his position.
A spokesperson for Downing Street said: “In all his calls, the Prime Minister reiterated his position on Greenland. He said that security in the High North is a priority for all Nato allies in order to protect Euro-Atlantic interests.
“He also said that applying tariffs on allies for pursuing the collective security of Nato allies is wrong.” Trump had said that tariffs would be imposed on each of the European countries that issued the supporting statement for Greendland from February 1, increasing to 25% from June 1, until America reaches a deal for the “complete and total purchase of Greenland”.
