GB News aired a major breaking news announcement in a new blow to Keir Starmer and his “smash the gangs” promise. Eamonn Holmes and Ellie Costello brought Home and Security Editor Mark White onto the show who announced that there were 250 migrants arriving in the UK “as we speak”, with four small boats being seen in the water. Mark confirmed one had already arrived and three were crossing during the live report, as Mark added “we expect there will be more” throughout today and tomorrow due to the good weather.

He said: “Whatever the government says it is or isn’t doing in the fight against people smugglers, demonstrably, it is not having the desired effect because when the weather is great, it allows them to cross in ever greater numbers, and yesterday we passed that grim milestone of 10,000 who have arrived so far this year and 24 hours on, it is at 10,500. It just shows you how quickly these things can change out in the channel.”

Mark then discussed the Labour government’s attempt to “tighten up” on those who should be receiving asylum by toughening the laws around those who have been convicted of sex offences.

The latest influx of migrant boats comes after it was announced yesterday that over 10,000 migrants have arrived in Dover this year alone.

GB News reporter Sam Francis said it was a “blow to Keir Starmer’s pledge to smash the gangs”, with far more arrivals in 2025 than at the same point last year.

He continued: “Five boats landed today along with the Border Force vessel Hurricane bringing them into Dover this morning.” A total of 71 migrants were on board. This follows 245 migrants who made the illegal journey on Sunday. GB News’s home and security editor Mark White said the flat and calm water of the English Channel was sparking a rise in migrants making the journey, with “more crossings to be expected over the next 48 hours”.

A Home Office spokesman said: “We all want to end dangerous small boat crossings, which threaten lives and undermine our border security.

“The people-smuggling gangs do not care if the vulnerable people they exploit live or die, as long as they pay – and we will stop at nothing to dismantle their business models and bring them to justice.

“That’s why this Government is investing in border security, increasing returns to their highest levels for more than half a decade, and imposing a major crackdown on illegal working to end the false promise of jobs used by gangs to sell spaces on boats.

“We have already secured agreement from the French to deploy a new elite unit of officers at the coast, launch a specialist intelligence unit, increase police numbers and introduce new powers for the French authorities to intervene in shallow waters.”
