GB News presenters Mark White and Ellie Costello had to pause their regular national news programme this morning (Monday, March 2) to deliver breaking news about strikes on Iran. They invited the Evening Standard’s defence editor, Robert Fox, onto the programme, where he responded to Prime Minister Keir Starmer‘s announcement that the UK has given the USA permission to use RAF bases to execute a strike on Iran.
As Costello said, she and White were reflecting on how Starmer would allow the US to use their air bases; she noted how “very careful legal language” was used by the Prime Minister. Issuing a blow to Starmer, Fox began: “Labour leaders get into terrible trouble with legal advice on wars in the Middle East…

“He looked as if he was speaking under duress,” the guest claimed, adding, “He looked like he didn’t want to be there, and he really didn’t want to be saying all of these things.
“And what happens when British interests and bases are attacked? It’s not if and when – it’s happened. This lawfare, not warfare, I think, there is going to be quite a row in parliament about this.
“Is this the right way to direct your armed forces in a war?”
Presenter Mark chimed in: “If the British government doesn’t agree with what the US has done, did the Spanish Prime Minister say he condemns the actions of the US?
Starmer accused Iran of pursuing a “scorched earth strategy”, granting requests by the USA to use British bases to protect allies in the Middle East and UK nationals.
The Prime Minister said bases would only be used for the “specific and limited defensive purposes” of targeting missile storage depots and stated how British forces would not directly be involved in the strikes.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump took to Truth Social last night to pen: “Last night, all over Iran, the voices of the Iranian people could be heard cheering and celebrating in the streets when [Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s] death was announced. The entire military command is gone as well, and many of them want to surrender into saving their lives. They want immunity. They’re calling by the thousands.”
