DVLA to launch huge new changes – ‘extremely popular’ with British drivers.l

The DVLA is bringing in some big changes in the next few months – and it could impact multiple things, from car taxes to driving licences.

The  2024 to 2025 Business Plan of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency details the goals and ambitions of the DVLA for the year to come.

One of the main steps it is taking is to boost its online operation and increase the number of services drivers can access digitally.

It has announced it wants to develop a new online service and bring it in as early as December 2024. It would allow vocational drivers to renew their licence through the “Driver and vehicles” account.

Meanwhile, in March 2025, a new “share my driving licence” service will be launched, through online accounts.

The DVLA’s Business Plan details how the agency will enhance its vehicle and keeper APIs to which the police have access, in order to further support forces and the Home Office.

And it has announced its goal to surpass its ambitious 90% target for its digital and automated interactions, to guarantee drivers can quickly and easily access and view their motoring documents.

Julie Lennard, chief executive and accounting officer at the DVLA, told GB News: “We want our customers to be able to access our multi-channel services as quickly and easily as possible. Our many digital services are extremely popular with our customers.

“Digital is an area we continue to focus on, and over the last year, we have continued to invest time and effort into building the right IT operating model to ensure that we have the right structure to continuously improve our digital services.”

In the UK, there are 52 million drivers and 46 million vehicle keepers. Last year, the DVLA says it dealt with 95.5 million individual customer transactions – and 84% of these were processed online.

Julie Lennard added: “Digital will continue to be at the forefront of our thinking. In the year ahead we will make further enhancements to our Driver and vehicles account service, which will benefit HGV drivers, who play a critical role in moving goods across the UK and beyond.”
