Dozens of students sent to isolation for wearing Union Jack just days after ‘culture’ row.uk

Pupils were made to ‘feel like wearing something British was dirty’ after being sent to isolation.

Dozens of students have been sent to isolation for wearing Union Jacks on a ‘culture day’ at school. Pupils at Ormiston Sandwell Community Academy in Oldbury, West Midlands, were reportedly asked to wear outfits to reflect their heritage, prompting lots to proudly wear colours of the Union Jack.

However, pupils were made to “feel like wearing something British was dirty” after being sent to isolation rooms. Mum Leanne Wehrle says her 15-year-old daughter Isobelle, who draped a flag over her shoulders, was among those held in meeting rooms. She claims children who donned different flags, such as Spain and Jamaica, were not met with the same treatment.

After pleading her case, Isobelle was even suspended for five days for arguing, Leanne told The Sun.

Leanne, 39, said: “Isobelle was put into an isolation room almost immediately, as were about 30 other kids. Yet many other children wore flags from the countries where their families originated, such as Jamaica and Spain, and had no problem.

“Isobelle and her friends were made to feel like wearing something British was dirty.

“When she asked the head why, all he could say was, ‘Because it’s not allowed’. Isobelle never gets into trouble — not until this happened, at least.”

Jenny Priest claimed her daughter Scarlett, 13, was also placed in isolation for sporting a white t-shirt with a Union Jack pattern on it.

Jenny, 38, said: “Isobelle stuck up for my daughter and she got into trouble for that.”

The school told The Sun that students were allowed to wear Union Jacks but added: “We have clear guidelines on non-uniform days. No student was suspended due to their choice of outfit on the day.”

It comes just a week after The Express exclusively revealed how Courtney Wright was stopped at the school gates and isolated from fellow pupils for wearing a Union Jack dress to celebrate British culture.

Instead of being able to enjoy a day with her classmates celebrating cultures, Courtney was isolated from other pupils and not allowed in lessons before her dad, Stuart Field, arrived to pick her up.
