migrant family camping on the streets of Stockport town centre has turned down accommodation because it is in a different area. Mohammed, his wife, and their son arrived in the UK last year from Iraq but have spent the last 10 days sleeping rough. The family, alongside another, has set up two tents outside the offices of Stockport Homes, a social housing provider.

Stockport Homes has claimed it offered the two groups accommodation and other support, yet Mohammed, 50, and his family have turned it down. Despite the offer, the migrant family say they are stuck on the streets. “We need help; it’s not safe here. I’ve been here for ten days, my wife is sick, we can’t stay like this.”

The family from Iraq turned down the offer of housing because it was outside the borough where they wished to stay and with a different housing provider, reports Manchester Evening News.

Moving out of Stockport, a town in the Greater Manchester area, would mean the family would be staying in an area which is not familiar to them. However, there are major housing shortages in the region, with thousands of people on the streets battling for social housing.

As a result, Mohammed, his wife, 48, and their son, 18, have no options for a home in Stockport — especially not at short notice, the housing provider says.

According to MEN, various other options have been discussed with the two groups in the tents. These include house shares with other people, as well as numerous appointments to chat about the other options available.

A Stockport Homes spokesperson said: “We know that seeing people sleeping in tents in the town centre is upsetting – and for those in that situation, it’s even more distressing. It’s something we take extremely seriously.

“There are huge pressures on the housing system, but help is available – and we’re here to make sure it reaches those who need it most.

“Our teams have already offered accommodation options to those on Edward Street, alongside personalised support, and advice.

“One person has accepted, while two have chosen not to take up the options presented. We’ll continue working with them to find solutions that meet their needs.”
