The large group of protesters gathered outside a hotel in Canary Wharf, London, were swarmed by cops and police vans amid claims on social media that asylum seekers are being housed there.

The Daily Express understands that no asylum seekers are being housed in the hotel and there are no plans to do so.

Police are at the scene outside the Britannia Hotel and some counter-protesters have been moved to safety after scuffles broke out moments after they placed themselves outside.

A video posted on social media shows eggs being thrown from a window at the hotel. Meanwhile, the protesters have been heard shouting “Keir Starmer is a w*****” as they gather outside the hotel.

Police vans arrive at anti-migrant protest outside London hotel

Video posted on X by Jack Hadfield appears to show five Territorial Support Group vans have arrived at the scene of an anti-migrant protest outside the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf.

Tensions briefly escalated as police officers moved in, with one protester beside a reporter shouting at the incoming vans, accusing them of “causing more problems than [they] solve.” The protest, which has drawn vocal opposition to the use of the hotel for housing migrants, continues amid a growing police presence.

Social media images appear to show police van blockading the hotel

According to an X post on the account of newsman Jack Hadfield, police vans have barricaded the vehicle entrance to the Britannia Hotel.

‘No migrants in hotel’

The Daily Express understands that no asylum seekers are being housed in the hotel and there are no plans to do so.

Witnesses report seeing people inside the hotel despite police and security preventing people from entering.

According to booking websites like Booking.com, the property is not “taking reservations on our site right now”.

‘We would make them tea’

A young woman who is handing out leaflets to protesters says that they would welcome the residents if they were women and children.

She said: “Why are they all men? Why are they all fighting age men that have left their families in supposedly unsafe countries?

“If it was my husband, he would not be my husband anymore if he left and left me at home.

“If that hotel was full of women and children, people wouldn’t be here and we would be sat having a cup of tea with them.”

Fears for safety of women at the forefront

Every protester I speak to lists the safety of local women as their primary concern with the hotel.

Some are admittedly driven by what they have read online, with several making unsubstantiated claims about the criminal records of hotel residents.

But others are genuinely worried, worried about the arrival of young men from a variety of cultures. Some say they have daughters and are outside this evening out of a fear for their safety if the hotel becomes a permanent base for those awaiting process.

Most mention what happened in Epping last week and it is perhaps not surprising that events which ignitied demonstrations there are at the forefront of their brains.

The heavy police presence, which has seen dozens of officers, tactical units and a helicopter deployed is likely also driven by the violent disorder seen outside the Essex asylum centre.

‘Law of averages’

Another protester said: “There will be around 1,500 people in here and the law of averages says that one will be a wrong un’.

“Would you want your daughter walking around here at night?”

‘Area is a tinderbox’

One man wearing a St George’s Flag warns one criminal incident is all it will take for violence to break out.

He said: “This place is a tinderbox, mark my word. One rape, one assault or anything and this place will go up in flames.

“I am here protesting peacefully but if that happens there will be nothing the police can do.”

Protester speaks out

Lorraine Kavanagh, 70, who has been working for a local charity on the Isle of Dogs for 42 years, said they serve over 1,000 people, most in employment, a week in their food bank, who “still cannot afford to come in here [the Britannia International Hotel] for one night for an anniversary or for a birthday”.

She continued: “The school holidays have now started […] so the kids are now out on the streets, where they should be; they should be out there playing.

“Parents should not be terrified that their children are out and could be […] approached, spoken to by people who have no passports, no identity.”

Protesters clashed with police outside migrant hotel in Epping

The latest protest comes after protesters clashed with police and counter-protesters outside a migrant hotel in Epping last Thursday (July 17).

Locals opposed to migrants being housed at The Bell Hotel gathered outside the venue and shouted “shame on you” at cops and counter-protesters.

Two security guards were assaulted by a group of men at a bus stop in the town. Meanwhile, the Express saw one officer hit in the head by a projectile thrown from the crowd.

Police were forced to block a road with vans and it is estimated around 200 protesters were in attendance. A man was arrested on suspicion of affray.

James Regan, a local Reform UK councillor, told the Express: “I’m here to protest against what’s going on here and across the country. They’re trying to infuse us with illegal migrants and we’re fed up with it now.”
