BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt skewered Energy Secretary Ed Miliband as he appeared on the show to discuss electricity charges.
Naga Munchetty quizzes Ed Milliband
BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty took on Ed Miliband as they grilled him on electricity charges potentially increasing for homes around the UK. As Naga grilled Miliband on zonal pricing, she asked whether these changes could see those who live further away from wind turbines be charged more than those who live closer. Miliband began to stutter as he tried to explain the thought process behind it, leaving Naga forced to interrupt him.
She said: “Sorry to interrupt, but I want to be really clear about this in my mind,” as Miliband tried to insist that bills would not be made higher for people around the country depending on their location. He said: “I don’t think it would be fair to raise prices in one part of the country to benefit another. We’re looking at both sets of reforms, and whichever reform we will choose, we will make sure it is fair and only go ahead with it if we can see a reduction in bills across the country.

Naga said: “So you would only do this if everyone’s bills came down, and no one’s rose disproportionately to other people’s? I’m being very careful about this, so no one’s bills would be highered disproportionately based on where they live?”
Miliband hit back: “I’m not sure what you mean by disproportionately,” as Naga hit back: “Well if someone’s bills were higher because they didn’t live near wind turbines.”
Miliband said: “I’m not sure I follow you there,” as he struggled to explain what he was trying to say, adding: “We’re still looking at this, but we’re trying to make sure it is fair.”
Naga ended the interview by saying: “Thank you for joining us, I look forward to getting more clarity on this in the future.”
The interview didn’t go down well with BBC viewers as they took to social media to hit out at Miliband’s responses.
One said: “Why do we need zonal pricing if it’s not going to create different charges?” A second raged: “What a load of waffle!”
A third swiped: “Hey Siri, show me the most incompetent, clueless, out of their depth MP in the UK…” as a fourth raged: “Zonal Pricing – Sounds like if bills don’t come down for everyone. Prices will stay high for everyone.
“Letting perfect get in the way of good.”
