The UK has suffered a string of blows to high streets across the country over recent years but it appears we are not alone. In 2024, it was reported that more than 8,000 UK stores closed down, and this trend has continued this year, with closures affecting a range of businesses, from banks and supermarkets to fashion retailers and toy stores, resulting and the loss of thousands of jobs.

Across Europe it has been a tough year too, including in France, where a well-known furniture brand has closed all of its branches for good.

Casa, renowned for its affordable home furnishings, closed all 143 of its stores across France this year, resulting in 700 staff members being made redundant.

The chain, founded in 1975, was an affordable option for anyone kitting out their home but with the rise in online shopping and a shift in consumer behaviour, Casa found itself bankrupt.

Casa launched an auction of its logistical assets, ranging from shelving and barcode scanners to surveillance systems, with lots valued between €16,000 and €34,000. The company also sold off its remaining stock, ranging from furniture to decorative items.

On June 11, 2025, the Bobigny Commercial Court declared the company in receivership. The collapse of the chain’s French sector comes as a result of the liquidation of Casa International, the company’s headquarters in Belgium.

According to Sortir Paris Casa International was responsible for the logistics, IT and strategic management of the chain, and when Casa France was placed in receivership in the hope that a buyer would be found but was unsuccessful, closure was the only option.

The chain’s France closures were followed by 13 shops closing in Portugal. The Judicial Court of Sintra ordered the closure of the Portuguese operations on September 12. Casa had approximately 500 stores across eight European countries, which have now all closed down.
