With the cost of food still rising and households looking for every possible way to stretch their weekly shop, bargain-hunters are celebrating a brilliant supermarket hack that gets shoppers free vegetables at Lidl, and, best of all, it’s available to anyone with a smartphone.
The discovery spread quickly after a member of the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group posted a photo of their haul, writing: “Spud u like my free bag in Lidl today.” Other shoppers immediately chimed in, confirming they’d taken advantage of the same offer. One wrote: “Yes, I got my free bag on Sunday. Didn’t opt for spuds tho,” while another added: “Got mine yesterday too, can’t beat them.”

Lidl has been issuing a “free vegetable item” coupon through the Lidl Plus app, which many shoppers say has scored them sizable bags of potatoes and other produce at no charge.
All customers need to do is download the app, create an account, scroll down to the free bag section and activate the offer before heading to checkout.
Once scanned, the cheapest eligible veg item becomes free, a welcome boost at a time when even basic groceries are creeping up in price.
More ways to get money off at Lidl
While the free veg offer is causing excitement online, it’s just one of several ways Lidl Plus members can save money during their weekly shop.
The loyalty app regularly provides personalised coupons based on shopping habits, meaning two customers rarely see the exact same deals.
Lidl’s Coupon Plus scheme also rewards shoppers the more they spend in a calendar month.
According to Lidl, the app can unlock perks ranging from a free bakery treat after spending £10 to larger discounts — including 10% off an entire shop, once customers reach higher spending thresholds, such as £250 in one month. The 10% off discount offered is up to a maximum of £20.
Selected users may also receive £5 off a £25 shop, although this offer varies and isn’t guaranteed for all accounts. Every coupon has its own expiry date, typically lasting 14 days from when it appears, and must be activated before scanning at the till.
The only requirement is that customers must be 18 or older and signed up to the Lidl Plus app to access these exclusive rewards.
