Dramatic footage has emerged on social media of the moment a man tackled one of the shooters as terror was unleashed in Australia.
A hero bystander has been caught on camera bravely tackling a gunman after shooters opened fire at a Jewish event in Sydney, Australia. Revellers had been enjoying a happy evening of celebration at the world famous Bondi Beach close to the city when two gunmen got out of a car and started shooting.
In an incredible piece of video shared on social media, one of the suspected gunmen can be seen firing shots before he is approached by a man who hides behind parked cars to get close. In an instant the man then leaps on the gunman and wrestles with the attacker before he manages to disarm him and turn the weapon on the terror suspect.
A Jewish Hanukkah celebration had reportedly started in the area of the shooting, according to ABC News – although there has been no official confirmation that this event was a target. Hanukkah, also known as Chanukah, is an eight-day festival of light.
Two people have since been arrested. According to Australia’s ABC news, police media confirmed 12 people were killed in the shooting, including one of the shooters and 11 victims. Police said 29 people were also injured, including multiple police officers responding to the incident. A second shooter is among the injured, and is in custody.
Ambulance crews have taken 29 patients to hospital and treated multiple patients at the scene in Sydney, according to a spokeswoman for New South Wales Ambulance. Bondi Beach is popular with tourists and expats. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she would speak with her Australian counterpart later on Sunday about the incident on Bondi Beach.
She told the BBC‘s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg show: “I’ve just seen the breaking news as I’ve arrived into the studio here this morning.
“I can fully understand the anxiety this might be causing people here at home about relatives over in Australia, but first and foremost, our thoughts must be with the victims of this attack in Australia and with with the Australian people as well.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing. Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected.
“I just have spoken to the AFP commissioner and the NSW premier. We are working with NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed.
“I urge people in the vicinity to follow information from the NSW Police.”
Michael McCormack, a Nationals MP, posted on X: “Sickening scenes at Bondi. Two shooters firing indiscriminately at innocent people. This is not Australia. Thoughts to those in the area and to the first responders.”
