BBC Breakfast viewers were left unimpressed as one star tried to break a Guinness World Record on Wednesday
BBC Breakfast viewers issued the same complaint on Wednesday (August 27) as they fumed, “What is going on?” During today’s edition of the hit morning programme, hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay updated fans on the latest news from across the UK and around the world.
John Watson also appeared in the studio to present the sports segment, while Carol Kirkwood provided regular weather updates.
The show soon took a break from normal proceedings as John attempted to break a Guinness World Record live on air.
He was tasked with holding as many table tennis balls in his hand as a nervous Sally and adjudicator Craig Glenday watched on. “The tension in the studio this morning is palpable. John’s quite nervous, I think,” Sally noted.
Craig then explained what John had to do: “So, this is an official Guinness World Record attempt for the most table tennis balls held in one hand. I’ve measured them, they’re 40mm, that’s all good.

“[You can] use one hand to put the balls into the other, and when you feel you’ve had enough, say go, and I’ll start the stopwatch, and you must hold them there for 30 seconds.”
Craig added that this was a “vacant” category waiting for the right person to fill it, saying: “I think John’s the man.”
John managed to hold 14 balls for 30 seconds, though he was aiming for at least six more than that.
“I’m devastated,” the disappointed presenter said. “Sorry, guys.”
Craig then revealed that John didn’t set the record, as the set minimum was 30 balls.

BBC viewers weren’t impressed after watching the segment, with many taking to X (formerly Twitter) to share their frustration.
“What the hell is going on?” one person wrote, with another adding: “What a balls up.”
A third said: “Can I get a refund on my licence fee?” while another viewer similarly said: “Could BBC Breakfast get any lower? Guinness World Record.”
A fifth person wrote: “Is this relevant on a news programme?” with another sharing: “Embarrassing. Turn on for news and get this nonsense.”
