BBC Breakfast sparked fury from viewers as it was halted for a breaking news segment – with fans switching off their TVs and demanding “stop wasting my licence fee”. The programme aired segments live from Washington D.C., where US president Donald Trump was meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir PutinKeir Starmer is also joining the world leaders in the US to “flesh out the details with other European leaders”.

Reporters were also live in Kyiv to cover the ongoing war in Ukraine as the summit takes place, while political correspondent Joe Pike was live in Westminster to discuss the news. But as BBC Monitoring Russian editor Vitaly Shevchenko spoke to viewers via video link, fans were left fuming.

One wrote: “Why do you employ so many staff? Aren’t we allowed to see the same person twice? You are wasting my licence fee. He’s told us what we already know.”

Somebody else penned: “Stop with your BS and biased reporting. Two Tier Keir couldn’t negotiate peace between three disgruntled rent boys […] he’s to diplomacy as you are to the truth,” before demanding “#DefundTheBBC.”

A third viewer grumbled: “BBC Breakfast and Sky News must have the same editors, both constantly showing clips of Trump bullying Zelensky in February and both read out verbatim nonsense posted by Trump on Truth Social. No wonder [he] loves UK media.”

It comes as fears have risen over Trump’s ‘friendliness’ with Putin. Despite demanding an immediate ceasefire, in person he downplayed the need for sanctions targeting buyers of Russian oil and told reporters “The best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up.”
