Anyone over the age of 60 is urged to spend just £1 in Asda stores in January to cash in on a winter scheme.
The supermarket chain has brought back its popular ‘Winter Warmer’ meal deal to its cafes which gives older customers the chance to tuck into a hot meal for a mere £1. The scheme, which has proved a hit in previous years, aims to support the over 60s during the cold and often lonely winter months when household budgets are stretched due to expensive heating bills. The deal includes a warming bowl of soup, bread and unlimited tea or coffee, for just £1 in any of Asda’s 212 cafes across the UK.
Customers have two soup flavours to choose from, either tomato or chicken, and the deal is available to eligible customers between now and Saturday, February 28, 2026, but with January often a month when budgets are tight after an expensive Christmas period, now is the perfect time to make the most of the deal and save some pennies.
The winter food offer is particularly beneficial to older customers in January when the weather is typically cold and wet, with the start of the new year getting off to a particularly bitter start.
While snow and ice has gradually been replaced by milder air, conditions have been mostly wet and blustry this week with the wet weather forecast to continue into this weekend.
The Met office is forecasting a mixture of sunny spells and showers on Saturday, which heavy and frequent downpours expected in the west, while from Sunday, further rain is on the cards, along with some overnight frost and fog patches which is forecast to freeze and be slow to clear.
With more cold and wet conditions to come, older people are encouraged to take small steps to stay warm to help fend off winter illnesses, and this includes eating at least one hot meal per day, and drinking regular hot drinks.
In its cold weather advice, the Met Office says: “It is important to keep warm in winter both inside and outdoors. Keeping warm can help to prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems.
“Eating regularly helps keep you warm so try to have at least one hot meal a day along with regular hot drinks.”
So with more cold and miserable weather to come this January, now is the ideal time to cash in on the £1 Asda deal and warm up with a tasty meal that won’t break the bank.
Asda’s Community Champions are also inviting and encouraging many local over 60’s groups and individuals to come along to their store café to use the £1 Winter Warmer meal as an opportunity to come and chat to others.
Last year, Asda’s Christmas community tracker laid bare the lack of human interaction and conversations millions of older people suffer in the run up and during the festive period, with one in 10 saying they aren’t sure they will speak to anyone between December 15 and January 1. Meanwhile, one in 10 over 60’s said they’d gone to a supermarket simply to speak to another person.
Jordan Cummings – Buying Manager, Cafes and Concessions at Asda said: “We know winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and on a fixed income.
“Last year alone we sold over half a million meals showing the vital need for this initiative. By bringing Winter Warmers back this November, we hope it will continue to be just as impactful across the winter months for those who need it most, as well as offering a relaxed social environment to come and chat to others.”
