AMISH COUNTRY CASSEROLE

When we think of “Amish” prefixed to a recipe’s title, it instantly conjures up an image of something hearty, homemade, and wholesome. But what exactly does it mean for a recipe to be “Amish”? While there isn’t a stringent set of guidelines to classify a dish as Amish, there are certain characteristics that such recipes often exhibit. Typically, Amish recipes are perceived as uncomplicated, using straightforward ingredients that are often found in a traditional Amish pantry. Above all, if a recipe is labeled “Amish,” many assume it’s bound to be delicious, right?

The Amish Country Casserole, whether or not authentically Amish in origin, certainly embodies the essence of what we’d expect from such a recipe. It’s unpretentious, filling, and economical—a comforting blend of ground beef, egg noodles, combined with the richness of cream of mushroom and tomato soups, seasoned just right.

Wondering if you can switch it up a bit? Absolutely! Ground Italian sausage would be a fantastic replacement, introducing a burst of flavor. If you’re aiming for a lighter version, ground chicken or turkey is a great choice. Even pork can seamlessly fit into this recipe.

However, a word of caution: if you decide to toss in veggies, ensure they are partially cooked prior to adding them to the casserole. The baking duration might not be sufficient for some vegetables to cook thoroughly.

In essence, while the Amish tag guarantees hearty goodness, don’t hesitate to make the recipe your own. After all, cooking is all about infusing one’s own creativity and preferences. Enjoy your culinary journey!

Procedure:

Begin by setting your oven to 180°C (350°F) and readying your baking dish with a coat of cooking spray.

Following the package’s guidelines, cook the pasta in a large pot until it’s al dente.

As your pasta is boiling, heat olive oil in a pan. Once it’s hot, add the chopped onions and crushed garlic, letting them soften. Introduce the ground beef to this mix, cooking until it’s no longer pink.

After draining your pasta, place it back into the pot. Incorporate the beef mixture, the two types of condensed soup, and milk. Mix well and season it using salt and pepper as per your liking.

Pour this hearty mixture into the baking dish you prepared earlier. For a burst of color and flavor, sprinkle the top with paprika and dried parsley.

Place your dish into the oven, allowing it to bake for about 25-30 minutes.

Once done, let it sit for a few minutes before serving. Dive in and relish the warmth and heartiness of this dish.
