Nigel Farage was bewildered by the latest update from Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood. The Reform UK leader took to GB News to address the latest proposal which left him raging “is this a joke?” on air. He started his segment by stating that there are multiple things that the Home Secretary has put forward that he does agree with “in terms of direction of travel”, but he’s clearly drawn the line. A clip then emerged of the MP at a conference on March 5.
The clip heard the Home Secretary saying: “This government will now pilot a similar model for families who are failed asylum seekers, a small number of whom will now be offered an increased incentive payment of £10,000 per person, and up to a maximum of £40,000 per family.” The show then returned to Farage whose mouth was gaped open and he sat wide-eyed in utter disbelief.

He then raged: “You what? 40 grand! When I was told this I thought it must be a joke. I mean literally, an April Fool’s joke.” Farage then said what was “extraordinary” was that at the same moment the announcement was shared, there were scenes of a “boatload of migrants arriving in Ramsgate”, he said as he was laughing through his words.
He stated there were 65 people at that moment in time and said: “If I came to Britain illegally, and I was able to get even £10,000 to go away, do you know what I’d do? I’d come back again. I’d play the round robin. This is an absolute farce.”
People rushed to the comments to support Farage’s sentiment as one user wrote: “Where do they get the money to pay them? She thinks we have too much money and which other country pays illegal migrants?”
Another raged: “They need to stop giving money hard working Brits have paid into this country. Stop the handouts and they’ll stop coming! These aren’t asylum seekers or refugees!, they’re bleeding our country dry and we’re paying for the privilege.”
It came as Mahmood said the government would seek to forcibly remove failed asylum seekers if they don’t accept “incentive payments” within seven days. The scheme is said to target 150 families living in taxpayer funded accommodation, with the Home Office estimating it could save £20m. Mahmood explained that housing a family of three in asylum accommodation is costing up to £158,000 per year.
She stated the government were consulting on how to remove families with children who were refusing to leave voluntarily “in a way that is humane and effective”.
