The Met Office issued two new weather warnings as fresh snowfall is feared to bring disruption to Brits living in 13 areas. The yellow warnings for snow are to come into force tomorrow, February 3.

The warnings issued on Monday focus on northern Scottish areas. The first alert to come into force will last from midnight tomorrow, February 3, to 3pm on Wednesday, February 4, and will cover local authorities in Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, Orkney & Shetland and Strathclyde.

The second warning issued on February 2 will come into force at 6pm tomorrow and will last until 11.59pm the following day, affecting the Shetland Islands.

The Met Office warned the snow falling between Tuesday and Wednesday this week may prompt travel disruption, with longer journey times by road and bus services to be expected in certain areas.

Drivers living in the areas affected by the warnings have been advised to pack essentials, with the warnings reading: “Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous. Keep yourself and others safe by planning your route, giving yourself extra time for your journey. Check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary.

“If driving, make sure you have some essentials in your car in the event of any delays (e.g., warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger).”

Areas under the snow alert to come into force at midnight could experience strong winds, the warning read.

It said: “Rain feeding into eastern and northern Scotland will increasingly fall as sleet and then snow through Tuesday and into Wednesday. By Wednesday accumulations of 1-3 cm are expected above 100 metres, with perhaps up to 5 cm in some places. For ground above 200 metres, accumulations of 10 cm are expected with some places locally seeing up to 20 cm.

“At low levels precipitation will be a mix of rain, sleet and snow which could lead to some small snow accumulations in places. Strong winds at times will lead to blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow, especially in the north of the warning area.”

Meanwhile, wintry showers over Shetland on Tuesday “will turn to more persistent snowfall from Tuesday evening, continuing throughout Wednesday with the potential to bring some disruption”, the Met Office said.

It added: “By the end of Wednesday accumulations of 1-3cm are expected quite widely, with perhaps up to 5-10 cm building up over higher ground.”
