The BBC is totally finished – after Gary Lineker this new scandal is unforgivable

The taxpayer-funded state broadcaster has plunged to a new low argues Giles Sheldrick.Former Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker

Holocaust Memorial Day is rightly a day on which the world stops to reflect on the unspeakable and undeniable horrors of humanity’s gravest crime – the state-sponsored genocide of six million Jews slaughtered by the Nazis simply on account of their religion.

The murder programme was perpetuated by history’s sickest minds and known as the Final Solution to the Jewish problem.

But in the woke and warped world inhabited by pearl-clutching programme makers at the BBC the fact men, women, and children were gassed, shot, and starved to death on account of being Jewish simply wasn’t worth mentioning on a day to mark the liberation of Auschwitz, a killing complex unrivalled in depravity in occupied Poland that became the scene of industrialised execution.

No place on earth has come to symbolise the reality of unchecked oppression, enslavement and death.

It’s not as if this was some peripheral act.

During the Second World War the Nazis, their allies and collaborators wiped out two-thirds of the Jewish population of Europe.

And so, after another unforgivable oversight, our state broadcaster was forced to issue another apology when it was pointed out coverage across TV and radio failed to mention the actual point of its broadcasts – that victims were Jewish.

It has left many wondering whether it was a deliberate attempt to rewrite history.

The inescapable truth is that Jews were hounded and persecuted because they were different. And this hatred, in whatever malignant shape it exists, still swirls today as the BBC should be all too aware.

Presenter Martine Croxall introduced one report by saying: “Today marks Holocaust Memorial Day. A day for remembering the six million people who were murdered by the Nazi regime over 80 years ago.”

The inexcusable oversight was repeated by BBC World News presenter Matthew Amroliwala and Breakfast host Jon Kay, while a BBC Radio 4 report also omitted the word Jews.

And people sitting in Broadcasting House still scratch their heads and wonder why the number of people switching off, or refusing point blank to pay £174.50 a year for the legal right to watch the BBC, grows ever larger with each passing day.

The BBC’s decision to conveniently airbrush the fact millions were marched to their deaths simply because they were Jewish is an abuse so serious that heads must roll.

In itself it is a heinous blunder but made worse because it follows a deeply disturbing trail leaving some to argue that regular cock ups are less rank incompetence and more a sinister agenda.

Smug Gary Lineker, paid north of £1.3 million a year to present a football highlights show, pumped out a stream of Left-wing nonsense on his social media channels without anyone at the BBC batting an eyelid.

His position became untenable when he shared a social media post about Zionism that included an illustration of a rat – an antisemitic insult used by Nazi Germany to characterise Jews.

Gaza: How to Survive a War Zone was pulled from iPlayer after it emerged its 13-year-old narrator was the son of a Hamas official.

And in the summer BBC coverage of Glastonbury showed Bobby Vylan leading a crowd in chants of “death, death to the IDF” (the Israel Defence Forces) and “free, free Palestine”.

For years the BBC has been bombarded with complaints over what has appeared to be anti-Israel bias.

Tuesday’s distortion of historical fact marks a new low for the BBC.

Not only does it risk fuelling rising antisemitism it provides succour to those who continue to claim, despite indisputable evidence to the contrary, history’s greatest crime was a hoax.

To a great many more it will be yet more evidence Britain’s state broadcaster is inherently untrustworthy and can no longer be relied upon to maintain the standards it is legally obliged to uphold.

No wonder so many people want it defunded.
