Weather maps have suggested that the UK is in for a blanket of snow in the coming days. Forecaster WXCharts shows the conditions in some areas of England and Scotland on January 30. The purple and white patch denoting wintery precipitation includes Cumberland, Northumberland, Westmoreland, Lancashire, Cheshire, West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Snow may also stray into Nottinghamshire, according to the chart.

North of the border, WXCharts suggests it will fall in Dumfries and Galloway, Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Highlands, Perth and Kinross, Angus, Stirling, Argyll and Bute, Angus, Aberdeenshire and the Highlands. At its deepest, snow will reach an incredible 89cm in Scotland, at 3pm that day. As for the temperature, lows are expected to be around -3C in Scotland at this time. The Met Office has published its own forecast, separate from that of WXCharts, for between January 29 and 31.

The experts wrote: “Staying unsettled with further showers or longer spells of rain, particularly in the southwest and eastern Scotland.

“Some drier interludes too, particularly in the east. Feeling chilly in brisk winds.”

It’s long-range forecast for February reads: “Weather systems from the Atlantic will continue to attempt to push in from the west, but tend to stall in the vicinity of the UK as they encounter high pressure to the north and northeast. As a result, further spells of rain or showers as well as strong winds are expected at times.

“Rain may be heavy and persistent, especially in the south and west. Whilst mild conditions are expected to encroach into the south and southwest at times, cold air is likely to be positioned to the northeast, bringing wintry showers at times.

“Where fronts from the southwest do reach the cold air towards the northeast, there is the risk of some snow, most likely across hills, but perhaps extending to lower areas at times.”

Specialists say it is tricky to predict snow in the UK.

“With a range of factors to consider, forecasting snow accurately in the UK can be one of the trickier forecasts to do accurately,” the Met Office says.

“Forecasting snow in the UK isn’t like some other places along the UK’s latitude, where snow can be quite reliably forecast days or weeks in advance.

“Because of the UK’s location, where the air comes from is incredibly important when it comes to determining if snow is possible. Being surrounded by water also adds another factor into predicting snow chances in the UK, it may not feel like it if you dip your toe in, but the water in the seas around the UK is well above freezing and that affects the temperature of the air close to the surface which can determine how much snow is in the forecast.”
