The Met Office issued new weather warnings for snow and rain in the UK, just minutes before announcing it had named a new storm as Chandra. Spanning 17 hours, the yellow weather warnings cover large swathes of Scotland and northern England.

The rain and snow warnings kick off at midnight, January 27 and will remain in place until 5pm on Tuesday. Up to 50mm of rain is possible in places, parts of the southern Pennines and southwest Scotland could see accumulations of 20mm in a three-hour period. The weather agency warns there “will be a sharp increase in snow depths with elevation” with areas above 500m likely to see 20cm of snow.

Met Office spokesperson said: “Outbreaks of rain will spread northwards on Monday night into Tuesday, falling as snow on high ground. Rainfall accumulations of 20-30mm are likely fairly widely with 40-50mm possible in places.

“Totals may accumulate fairly quickly in parts of the southern Pennines and southwest Scotland, which could see accumulations of 20mm in a 3 hour period.

“Whilst accumulating snow is unlikely at low-levels, there will be a sharp increase in snow depths with elevation, with the potential for 2-5 cm in places above about 300m, 5-10 cm above 400m, and 10-20 cm above 500m.”

The forecaster is warning that drifting is possible in rather brisk southeasterly winds. Strong, gusty winds, especially to the west of hills, may exacerbate the potential for transport disruption.

The warning is set to remain in place from 5am until 9pm on Tuesday, with strong winds expected to cause potential disruption.

It has also issued an amber warning for heavy rain from 5pm Monday until 9am Tuesday for south-west England. A Met Office spokesperson said: “Storm Chandra will bring persistent rain, heavy at times, later Monday and overnight before steadily clearing northeastwards on Tuesday morning.
